Bluefors Inc Joins CQE to Cool the Quantum Prairie

Bluefors Inc News

Bluefors Inc, the world leader in cryogenic cooling systems and quantum infrastructure, has formally joined the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE), a step that greatly enhances the “Quantum Prairie.” With the announcement of this cooperation on May 2026, the Midwest is at a turning point in its efforts to develop a strong quantum supply chain, scale a domestic quantum workforce, and increase its capacity for innovation.

Deepening Roots in the Midwest

Bluefors, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, has been expanding in the US, particularly in the Illinois-Wisconsin-Indiana ecosystem. CQE collaboration of national labs, universities, and 70 business and nonprofit partners intends to expedite quantum research from discovery to large-scale application.

The company’s developing laboratory shows its regional commitment. The 320-square-foot Bluefors Lab at mHUB in Chicago opened last year. The Bloch Quantum, an EDA-designated Tech Hub, made this first step possible. The Bloch Quantum is seeking federal funding to promote domestic quantum manufacturing in the US, with Chicago as the hub.

The UChicago Science Incubator in Hyde Park Labs will unveil a new facility on May 12 to build on that success. With an LD400He Measurement System and direct access to specialized technical knowledge for local researchers, this new 580-square-foot Lab Service facility will greatly improve the technical resources available in the area.

The Role of Cryogenics in the Quantum Economy

In the context of the emerging quantum field, the significance of cryogenics cannot be emphasized. Environments maintained at temperatures near absolute zero are frequently necessary for quantum computing, telecommunication, and sensing technologies.

Bluefors facilitates the “hands-on experimentation” necessary for university researchers and early-stage entrepreneurs to test their technology by offering these intense cooling settings. This role was emphasized by David Awschalom, the founding director of the CQE and the Liew Family Professor of Quantum Engineering and Physics at the University of Chicago, who pointed out that by providing faculty and students with special opportunities for experimentation, Bluefors is increasing the “innovation capacity” of the area.

Driving Workforce and Supply Chain Development

The alliance worries about Midwest economics outside the lab. As the technology develops, the quantum industry is anticipated to play a significant role in the development of jobs locally. In an effort to develop this workforce, Bluefors is already interacting with the community. In an effort to excite the next generation of scientists and engineers, the business took part in Quantum Across Illinois on April 23. This program invites quantum experts to public schools across the state.

Chicago has long been a “trailblazer” for these ecosystems and a “vibrant hub for quantum innovation,” according to Sauli Sinisalo, Vice President of Bluefors. Bluefors hopes to enable partners to propel the larger quantum economy by providing flexible access to cryogenic measurement instruments through its labs at mHUB and Hyde Park Labs.

A Full-Spectrum Ecosystem

The goal of the CQE is to create a “full-spectrum” ecosystem that encompasses all aspects of the quantum lifecycle, from commercial goods that enhance daily living to fundamental research conducted in national labs. A crucial link in the supply chain is created with the addition of a worldwide leader like Bluefors, guaranteeing that the gear required to fund Midwest research is accessible locally.

The existence of specialized cryogenic facilities will probably attract new entrepreneurs as the area vies for additional EDA financing and seeks to bolster the Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana tri-state ecosystem. The CQE and Bluefors are essentially “cooling” the way for the upcoming generation of quantum discoveries by reducing the entry barrier for expensive cryogenic testing.

The next significant event in this collaboration will be the Hyde Park Labs facility’s launch on May 12, which will further solidify Chicago’s position as a key hub in the global quantum network. The CQE and its partners hope to make the “Quantum Prairie” a world leader in at-scale quantum technology through ongoing cooperation.
