Co-Developing Next-Generation Quantum Hardware
The core of this partnership is a cooperative endeavour to build upon current ion trap technology developments. Next-generation materials and electronics will be jointly developed by Emergence Quantum and IonQ. The design and simulation of qubit control application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are included in this important work.
The teams will also be tackling the difficult problems of growing system capacity while lowering hardware complexity. They will also investigate novel materials and deposition methods to greatly improve the performance of ion traps. The work of Emergence Quantum, especially its use of integrated cryogenic electronics to overcome the scaling issues of quantum computers, is centered on this emphasis on integrated hardware platforms and underlying technology.
A Strategic Alignment of Expertise and Goals
The alliance aims to capitalize on Australia’s abundant quantum talent. SVP of IonQ’s Engineering and Technology division, Dr. Dean Kassmann, emphasized that the partnership is part of a larger plan to engage regional specialists and organizations worldwide in advancing high-performance, scalable quantum computing and networking. IonQ has substantial access to a “world-class team of Ph.D. quantum scientists” with decades of expertise in cryogenic electronics and quantum engineering for this project, he emphasized.
Professor David Reilly, Emergence Quantum’s CEO and co-founder, pointed out that Australia has a substantial need for quantum technologies. He was thrilled to be working with IonQ, saying that the partnership will enable them to quicken Australia’s quantum development and expansion. Prof. Reilly also discussed the partnership’s goal of overcoming Australia’s long-standing problem of drawing in foreign investment without sacrificing talented and knowledgeable locals.
