Origin Wukong Quantum Computer is China’s home-grown third-generation autonomous superconducting quantum computer, developed by Origin Quantum, a company based in Hefei, China. It officially commenced operations on January 6, 2024, marking China’s entry into the era of accessible quantum computing.

The computer is named after Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, a fictional character from the 16th-century classic Journey to the West, renowned for his “72 transformations” and magic powers. This name symbolizes the machine’s formidable capabilities, versatility, and transformational potential.

Technical Specifications and Development

Qubit Count: Source Wukong is a 72-qubit superconducting quantum computer that uses a “Wukong chip” that was created by the company. 72 functional qubits and 126 extra coupler qubits, which are intended to improve communication and preserve control over interactions as the number of qubits increases, make up the chip’s 198 total physical qubits.

Operating Environment: The temperature at which it must function must be near absolute zero (-273.15°C), just as previous quantum computers. Specially connected wires that can isolate heat and transfer signals without distortion are needed for this.

Zuchongzhi 3.0, which contains 105 qubits and has been presented by another Chinese group, has set a new record for quantum computational advantage in superconducting systems.
